Fr. Rocco Puopolo is a Xaverian Missionary, presently director of the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Holliston MA. He served as a missionary in Sierra Leone, West Africa for 12 years over a span of 26 years. He has served as a high school teacher, superintendent of schools, university chaplain and national chaplain of the Young Christian Student Movement as well as Catholic Youth Organization. The method and praxis used by the Young Christian Student Movement is "See, Judge, Act". Fr. Rocco will share how he uses this method with youth groups here in the United States.
While in Sierra Leone in 1997, young soldiers, all aged around 11, attacked the Father's Mission Center to loot. One boy, thinking he had befriended Father, asked him to unlock the office. The boy soldier tried to pull Father to the door and then shot his AK-47 toward the floor to frighten Father. A bullet entered his thigh. Father did not see it or feel it but the boy did and ran away. Later, the boy came back to loot all the valuables.
In 1991 when the local war began, Sierra Leone had 15,000 child soldiers. Many wars still use children today. Come hear Father Rocco speak about what his time in Africe has taught him about Catholic Social Teachings.
